Highway Transportation

Belington, in southern Barbour County, is just 5 miles from 4-lane U.S. Rt. 33, which is Corridor H of the Appalachian Highway System.  Corridor H has been completed from I-79 near Weston to Elkins.  When the eastern portion is complete, the Corridor will connect central West Virginia with I-81 at Strasburg, VA.

Philippi, in the northern part of the county, is 20 miles from I-79 to the northwest and 20 miles from Corridor H to the south.

The area is served by U.S. highways 119 and 250 and West Virginia State roads 38, 57, 76 and 92.

Air Transportation:
The Philippi/ Barbour County Regional Airport has estimated annual aircraft operations of 5,500.  The airport has dusk-to-dawn lights, a 3200X60-ft. runway and private hanger facilities.  No commercial flights originate here.

The North Central West Virginia Airport in Bridgeport, 20 miles from Philippi, has a runway length of 7,000 feet and a width of 125 ft.  The airport serves commuter and private aircraft. 

U.S. Route 250 connects Barbour County with Staunton, VA, and Martins Ferry, OH. It intersects at Norton in Southern Barbour County with Corridor H (Rt. 33), a 4-lane highway that will link I-79 and I-81 when completed. US 119 connects Barbour County with Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

The Philippi Industrial Park is served by a rail spur.  Access for the railroad has become an important transportation alternative for businesses located in the industrial park, especially given the high cost of fuel. 

The Philippi/Barbour County Airport, located near Philippi, also offers air travel into the county.  The Airport Authority has been working diligently to expand and enhance the facility with recent improvements totaling several million dollars.  The Authority recently completed construction on a 10-unit hangar complex and a fuel farm.  Both projects are sure to enhance the facility and facilitate expanded usage for air service in Barbour County. Barbour County is also served by Here and There Transit, the County’s general public transportation system.  Operated through the Barbour County Senior Center, the system provides transportation service between Philippi and Belington as well as many locations throughout the region including Elkins, Buckhannon, and Clarksburg.
