 | Flags Over Philippi
The five flags flying over Philippi's Blue & Gray Park represent most of the banners that were present in the city on June 3, 1861. The flags of the mid-19th century were made of wool, cotton, and silk. Some were hand-sewn, others painted. Of those on display, the flag of the United State of America in 1861 represented the 34 states. West Virginia would become the 35th.
The Headquarters Flag of Colonel George A. Porterfield flew over his headquarters at the Virginia House, a site now occupied by Bank One in Philippi. The "Palmetta" flag was raised over the Philippi Courthouse January 1, 1861 and was removed by Federal troops on June 3. The Virginia Regimental Flag is one of the early war versions used by the infantry regiments of Virginia. The original is in the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia.
The Churchville Cavalry Flag was presented to men from Churchville, Virginia, by the women of that community in May of 1861 and is also part of the collection of the Museum of the Confederacy.
